A chess tactic is a short, forcing sequence — usually two to five moves — that wins material or forces mate by exploiting a concrete weakness in the opponent's position. Ten patterns cover almost everything that actually happens on a club-level board: the fork, the pin, the skewer, the discovered attack, deflection and decoy, overloading, removing the defender, the zwischenzug, the back-rank mate and the smothered mate.

Below is each pattern with a real diagram you can open in the engine and play out yourself. Learn to recognise these shapes on sight and your results will stop depending on whether your opponent happens to blunder first.

How tactics actually get found

Tactics are not discovered by staring at the board hoping for inspiration. They are found by checking a short list of concrete features, in order, on every move:

  • Forcing moves first. Every check, every capture, every direct threat — yours and your opponent's. Almost all tactics begin with a forcing move, because forcing moves cut the defender's replies down to a number you can actually calculate.
  • Loose pieces. An undefended piece is the raw material of nearly every double attack. Scan both sides for pieces defended by nothing.
  • Alignment. Pins, skewers, discovered attacks and X-ray effects all depend on two enemy pieces sharing a rank, file or diagonal. Whenever the enemy king and queen sit on one line, something is usually available.
  • Overworked defenders. If one piece holds two things together, the position is one accurate blow from collapsing.

Knowing the relative value of the pieces matters here: a tactic is only worth playing if what you win exceeds what you invest.

1. The Fork

A fork is a single move that attacks two or more targets at once. The opponent can only answer one threat, so the other target falls. Every piece can fork, but the knight is the classic forking piece, because its move cannot be blocked and no other piece can attack it back along the same line.

The best forks involve check, because the defender then has no time to counterattack. The squares to watch are the ones a knight can reach that touch both the enemy king and another undefended piece; with practice you see them as a shape rather than a calculation. Pawn forks are cheaper still: a pawn attacking two minor pieces wins one outright, since neither can capture the pawn without loss. 2. The Pin

A pin freezes a piece against something more valuable behind it. The pinned piece is stuck: moving it either exposes the king (illegal) or drops the bigger piece behind it.

After 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+ Nd7 the knight on d7 is absolutely pinned and cannot legally move. Play this position →

There are two kinds:

  • Absolute pin — the king is behind. Moving the pinned piece would be an illegal move, so it genuinely cannot move at all.
  • Relative pin — a queen or rook is behind. Moving the pinned piece is legal but usually loses material, so the piece is only half-frozen.

A pinned piece is a bad defender. It may still be guarding a square on paper, but if it is absolutely pinned it can never actually recapture there. That is why the standard follow-up to a pin is to pile more attackers onto the pinned piece: each new attacker gains a full tempo, because the target cannot run. 3. The Skewer

The skewer is the pin turned inside out: the valuable piece is in front and the cheaper one behind. Attack the front piece, it moves to save itself, and you capture whatever was hiding behind it. Like pins, skewers can only be delivered by line pieces — bishops, rooks and queens.

Pin versus skewer

  • Pin: cheap piece in front, expensive piece behind. The front piece is stuck.
  • Skewer: expensive piece in front, cheap piece behind. The front piece runs, and the back piece is taken.

That is the whole difference, and mixing the two up is the most common vocabulary mistake beginners make.

Absolute skewers

If the piece in front is the king, the opponent has no choice at all. The king must step off the line, and whatever stood behind it is simply lost.

Black must move the king off the d-file, and White answers with Rxd8. Note that the queen cannot interpose anywhere on the d-file, because the king itself blocks the route.

Relative skewers

When the front piece is a queen or rook rather than the king, the opponent is not legally obliged to move it — but usually will, since losing a queen is worse than losing a rook. Relative skewers are therefore less reliable: an alert defender may find a retreat square that still guards the piece behind. Always check whether the front piece has such a square before you commit.

Skewers in the endgame

Skewers are far more common in endgames than in middlegames, because kings become active and there are fewer pieces to block lines. The single most valuable version to know is the rook skewer against a king and a newly promoted queen.

The same idea saves games as often as it wins them: in a lost pawn race, checking a king that stands in front of its own queen can trade your rook for the new queen and rescue a draw. If you enjoy this kind of line geometry, the related X-ray attack works through a piece rather than around it.

How to hunt skewers: scan for enemy king, queen and rooks sharing a rank, file or diagonal; use checks to force the king onto a line that already has a loose piece on it; and in endgames, check the diagonals of your bishop and the files of your rook every single move.

4. The Discovered Attack

A discovered attack is a move by one piece that unleashes an attack from a long-range piece behind it. Because two pieces make threats on the same move, the defender usually cannot answer both.

The knight stands between the rook on e1 and the black king. Nxc5+ takes the queen and reveals check at the same time. Play this position →

Black must answer the check from the rook — nothing can block on the e-file and nothing can capture the knight — so the queen is simply gone.

Discovered check

When the revealed attack is a check, the tactic becomes almost unanswerable. The moving piece can go anywhere it likes, including onto a defended square, because the opponent is legally required to deal with the check first and therefore never gets to capture it. This is why discovered check wins material that looks perfectly well protected.

Double check

The most violent form: the moving piece also gives check, so two pieces attack the king simultaneously. A double check can never be blocked and the checking pieces can never be captured, because you cannot block two lines or capture two pieces in one move.

The only legal reply to a double check is a king move.

That property drives many of the prettiest forced mates in chess, including the smothered mate at the end of this article.

Building the pattern

Discovered attacks are set up, not stumbled upon. Line your queen, rook or bishop up behind your own knight or pawn and point the battery at something the opponent cares about. Then look for a jump by the front piece that is itself a check or a capture, so the discovery is as forcing as possible.

5. Deflection and Decoy

These two are mirror images and are best learned together. Deflection forces a defender away from a job it is doing. Decoy lures a piece onto a square where it can be attacked.

Deflection

The black queen is the only guard of the eighth rank. Re8+ drags it away and mate follows. Play this position →

The line is short and completely forced:

1. Re8+  Qxe8
2. Rxe8#

The king cannot move, nothing can interpose, so the queen must capture on e8 — and the moment it leaves a8 the second rook mates. White gave up a whole rook, which is irrelevant: the point of a deflection sacrifice is that the defender is dragged off its post, not that the material is even.

Decoy

A decoy pulls an enemy piece — very often the king — onto a square where a second tactic is waiting.

Rh8+ lures the king to h8, where Nf7+ forks it with the queen on d8. Play this position →

The rook is not really being sacrificed — it is being invested in a square. Whenever you see an enemy king and queen a knight's-move apart from a common square, ask what it would cost to force the king onto that square. Our dedicated guide on deflection and decoy has more of these shapes.

6. Overloading

An overloaded piece is a defender with two jobs it cannot do at once. You do not need to remove it — you just need to ask it to do both things on the same move.

The rook on e8 must guard the bishop on e5 and the back rank. dxe5 asks it to do both. Play this position →

If Black recaptures, the back rank collapses. If Black declines and defends the eighth rank instead, White is simply a piece up. Neither choice is available at once — that is the definition of the tactic, and there is a fuller treatment in the overloading guide.

7. Removing the Defender

Where overloading exploits a defender that has too much to do, removing the defender deals with a defender that is doing one job perfectly well — by capturing it, driving it away, or trading it off. The most common practical form is eliminating the knight that guards a mating square in front of a castled king.

Recapturing with the pawn does not help either: after 1...gxf6 the h7 square is still undefended, the queen lands there supported by the bishop on d3, and the rook on f8 and the pawn on f7 seal off the king's escape. Before you dismiss a mating idea because one piece guards the key square, always ask what that guard is worth and whether you can take it. The same removal logic underpins the Greek gift sacrifice.

8. The Zwischenzug (In-Between Move)

Zwischenzug is German for "in-between move" — intermezzo in Italian. It is an intermediate move inserted into an expected sequence, usually a check or a bigger threat, played before the move the opponent is counting on. It is the single most common reason careful calculation still goes wrong, because most players calculate captures as if recaptures were automatic.

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Nc3 Nxe4, the automatic recapture is not the strongest move. Play this position →

The natural 5.Nxe4 runs into 5...d5!, a pawn fork hitting the bishop on c4 and the knight on e4 at the same time; Black regains the piece and the position is level. Inserting an in-between check first changes the whole sequence:

5. Bxf7+  Kxf7
6. Nxe4   d5
7. Neg5+

Now 6...d5 attacks only one piece, and that piece leaves with check because the black king is sitting on f7. Material is level, but Black has permanently lost the right to castle and White develops with tempo. Nothing changed except the order of the moves. The three shapes to look for

  1. The intermediate check (Zwischenschach). A check cannot be ignored, so it always gets played first. This is the most common and most effective form.
  2. The bigger threat. Instead of recapturing, attack something worth more — a loose queen, or a mate in one. The opponent must answer the larger threat, and you recapture afterwards with an extra tempo or an extra piece.
  3. The doomed piece that sells itself. If a piece is lost anyway, it should capture something on its way out rather than sit and wait. That is the desperado motif, and it is a close cousin of the in-between move.

Building it into your calculation

Every time an exchange starts, stop before writing "and then he recaptures" and ask one question: does either side have a check, capture or serious threat to insert first? Calculate one move past the recapture rather than stopping at it. Most missed tactics and most self-inflicted losses come from ending a variation one move too early — the habit is covered in depth in how to calculate variations and in the candidate moves method.

9. The Back-Rank Mate

After castling, the three pawns that shelter your king also imprison it. If your king has no escape square, a single rook or queen reaching the back rank is mate.

Two habits prevent a great many lost games. First, when the position simplifies with rooks or queens still on, make luft — push the h-pawn one square so the king has a hole to run to. Second, before every exchange, count the defenders of your own back rank. Most "unlucky" losses are really an unnoticed back-rank weakness; the back-rank mate guide has the defensive checklist.

10. Smothered Mate

The most beautiful pattern in chess: a knight mates a king that is completely walled in by its own pieces. It normally arrives via a queen sacrifice that forces a friendly piece onto the last free square.

Qg8+ forces the rook to capture on g8, and Nf7 is mate with the king walled in by its own pieces. Play this position →

The king cannot take on g8 because the knight on h6 guards it, so the rook is forced to capture — and thereby blocks the only square the king could have used. This finish is usually reached through a discovered double check: with the queen already on the b3–g8 diagonal, Nf7+ Kg8 Nh6+ arrives as a double check, the king is forced back to h8, and the queen sacrifice lands. Patterns worth adding next

Once the ten above are automatic, four more repay study quickly:

  • Windmill — a repeating cycle of discovered check and check that harvests piece after piece while the enemy king shuffles helplessly.
  • Clearance sacrifice — giving up a piece purely to vacate a square or open a line for a teammate.
  • Interference — placing a piece on the intersection of two defensive lines so one defender blocks the other.
  • Zugzwang — not a tactic so much as its endgame counterpart: the opponent is fine until forced to move, and every legal move loses.

How to train tactical vision

Pattern recognition beats calculation. A strong player does not calculate a knight fork from scratch — they see the shape and then verify it. Three things build that library fastest:

  1. Solve short puzzles daily, not long ones. Two- and three-move problems repeat the same twelve shapes endlessly. That repetition is the entire point.
  2. Name the pattern out loud when you solve it. "Deflection, then back rank" sticks in memory far better than a move you found by trial and error.
  3. Review your own losses for missed tactics on both sides. Working through your games with board vision drills and a habit of checking for common blunders turns each defeat into two or three new patterns.
